Historical Monument

Last weekend we were able to venture out and take MB to a historical monument. Ellicott's Stone is a survey monument that was set in 1799. Troy is a land surveyor and really wanted to make the trip to see this marker since we were in the area.

Andrew Ellicott was commissioned by President George Washington to define the 31st parallel of the North latitude. This line delineated the boundary between Spain and the US. It's a point of intersection for the St. Stephens baseline and the St. Stephens principal meridian that we use to write legal descriptions in South MS. The stone (still original) is outside of Mobile and made for a great history lesson for MB and I.

All I could think of was how terrible this trip had to have been for these guys...nasty muggy weather, terrible mosquito's and harsh terrain. Troy said they made the trip from Washington, D.C. They were committed to a job well done.
